6/9/2017 0 Comments My Second ClassIt has been over a month since my last class. This time, only two kids showed up. I had hoped for more, but the two who had showed up had come to my last class. I figured that they must have enjoyed my class for them to come again. I "quizzed" them on material I had taught them in April, and they remembered some of it. The beginning of class was spent reviewing from last class along with more stretches and exercises. The second half of class, I started them on the Eight Point Blocking System. This is usually taught to white belts in my studio. Having taught the toddler and 7-9 age groups at my karate studio the summer before, I knew how to simplify the block so they would learn them easily. I used nicknames for the blocks. For example, the first block is meant to block a front punch and the hand movement looks similar to scooping ice cream. I found that teaching them fun names to remember each block allowed them to remember the blocks faster.

4/29/2017 0 Comments My First ClassApril 29th. I held my first karate class today. Five girls showed up, one of which had taken martial arts classes a couple years ago. The other four had never taken a martial arts class before. I first talked to them about what martial arts is, and why it is important to have self defense skills. Then, we warmed up with some stretches and quick exercises (jumping jacks, running in place, sit ups). We worked a little bit on push ups and the correct way to do a push up. Then we learned simple punches and kicks, such as the front punch, back punch, thrust punch and the front ball kick, front instep kick, and crescent kick. At the end of the class, I "quizzed" them on these punches/kicks to test what they had retained from my class. This was a fun way to review for them, but also let me know whether they had learned what I had taught over the last hour. I was surprised as they were able to identify each punch and kick, with limited help.
